There aren’t many groups of people that are more drawn to comics than members of our armed forces. I’ve lost count of the soldiers, marines, airmen, sailors, etc. that have mentioned super-heroes as their initial inspiration to “protect.” The line, “I want to be Batman, Superman, etc.” is uttered daily by millions of kids across this great country, but some of those kids take that a step further, and they grow up to protect our freedoms we all hold dear.
To that point, we still mail packages every week to APO’s around the world, and get messages at least once a month telling us how this title or that title was a soldier’s favorite to pickup when they were stationed overseas. Comics have a wonderful storied history with our armed forces, as they have the ability to provide a little slice of home, even from thousands of miles away.
Comics & the armed forces also play a VERY important part in ACC’s founding. It was my grandfather, a veteran of the US Marine Corps for over 30 years that gave me my first comics. He and a few marine buddies were almost singlehandedly responsible for keeping a small LCS in business for years when the industry was pretty down, and it was comics that helped get him through 2 tours in Vietnam. My first comics were read to me with the “gusto” of a USMC drill sergeant. I guess it’s no surprise this is where I ended up.
